Subnautica Below Zero Get Items Back From Sea Monkey

Subnautica: Below Zero is finally out of early access and available on both PCs and consoles. The open-world survival game had first made its debut on Steam and the Epic Games Store in early 2019, and its developers had spent the two years since then gathering feedback and making refinements to its core mechanics.

Players who played those earlier builds of the game would have no doubt gathered all the skills they need to survive its harsh open world. But for anyone just taking a plunge into the icy ocean of Planet 4546B for the very first time, the whole thing might seem a bit daunting. To help them out on this particular expedition, here are 10 tactics employed by pro players.

10 Get A High Capacity O₂ Tank

In Subnautica: Below Zero, one of the player's primary stats is their oxygen level. This determines how long they can spend underwater before needing to get back to the surface for air. And as anyone can imagine, the player can't stay underwater for too long. At least not without an oxygen tank.

The good news is a Standard O₂ Tank is available for crafting from the start of the game, so getting one should be a priority right off the bat. But pro players know that there is also a High Capacity O₂ Tank that can be unlocked further into the game, which opens up the possibility of exploring greater depths.

9 Get Oxygen From Fish Or Plants

And while we are still on the topic of oxygen, the air on the surface and an 02 tank are not its only sources within the game. Planet 4546B is full of all manner of animal and plant life, some of which give off a small amount of oxygen.

Two examples of these are the Bladder Fish and the Titan Holefish, both of which give 15 points of oxygen. Another is the Oxygen Plant, which gives 30 points. So running out of oxygen during an expedition doesn't have to spell immediate doom for the player provided one of these alternatives can be found floating around nearby.

8 Cook Fish With The Thermoblade

Aside from needing oxygen, two other stats that players need to monitor are Food and Water. Both can be replenished by consuming specific items like disinfected water and a variety of fish and aquatic life.

The latter can be eaten raw, but more points are replenished if it is cooked beforehand. And one nifty way of cooking meals without needing to use a Fabricator is by using the Thermoblade instead. This would instantly turn any fish killed by it into its cooked variant, eliminating the need for an extra step.

7 Avoid Getting Lost In The Depths

The map in Subnautica: Below Zero might not be as huge as the one in the previous game, but that does not mean it is not quite expansive in its own right. And new players might be tempted to attempt exploring the full extent of it from the get-go.

Seasoned players on the other hand know better than to give in to that temptation. Many dangers await in the depths of the deepest caves, none of which we'll be spoiling here of course. But it is worth noting that such places are best avoided for that very reason. This is especially the case early on in the game when the player is yet to acquire the right tools for the job, like a bigger oxygen tank.

6 Avoid Getting Trapped Under The Ice

As the subtitle of the game already suggests, the temperature in Subnautica: Below Zero can fall well below zero degrees celsius. This results in portions of the ocean freezing over, and it is not uncommon to see ice floes drifting on its surface.

None of that should be news to veteran players of course, but new players need to be mindful of these ice masses while exploring the ocean, as they can effectively prevent them from quickly getting to the surface for air should they get caught underneath a large cluster. So it is best to take periodic glances at the surface to avoid this.

5 Craft With Dead Batteries

Most of the tools used in Subnautica: Below Zero are powered by batteries. And just like any other resource in the game, batteries get depleted over time.

The knee-jerk reaction for most players once this happens is to discard them to make room for other items in their inventory. But seasoned players are aware of the fact that not only can dead batteries be recharged using a Battery Charger, they can also be used in crafting fully-charged tools and power cells regardless of their depleted state.

4 Befriend The Sea Monkeys

Of all the creatures to be found in the ocean of Planet 4546B, sea monkeys are easily the most notorious. These deceptively cute creatures are known to steal tools out of the hands of unwary players and then swim off before they have the chance to get them back.

One way to ensure that does not happen is by putting away the tools before they nick them. But did you know that you could actually befriend the sea monkeys? This happens in the game after the player encounters Al-An, an alien consciousness preserved in something called the Data Hub. After that, the sea monkeys would actually bring the player random crafting materials, which makes for a nice change of pace.

3 Move Faster With A Booster Tank

One of the new craftable items in Subnautica: Below Zero is the Booster Tank. It functions much like a regular High Capacity O₂ Tank with the added benefit of temporarily boosting the player's movement speed.

The trade off is that this increases the rate at which their oxygen level gets depleted, so it is definitely a tool that needs to be used sparingly. But it can still prove useful in situations where they need to quickly get away from something, or they just desire to cut down on their travel time.

2 Cover Greater Distances With The Snowfox

And speaking of cutting down on travel time, one particularly nifty way of getting around quickly is by using the newly-introduced hoverbike, the Snowfox.

The vehicle functions just like the Seaglide, with the key difference being that it increases the player's movement speed while on land as opposed to in the water. The vehicle can even be upgraded with a module that allows the player to perform jumps with it, making traversal fun and exploration feel less like a chore.

1 Teleport Back To The Seatruck

A lot of the mystery in the Subnautica games involves the Precursor Race (the group of aliens that once came to Planet 4546B in search of a cure for their homeworld) and discovering some of the relics and technology that they'd left behind.

One such technology was the Alien Arches from the first game, which basically functioned as gateways that allowed them to teleport from one location to another. And in the time since their discovery, humans have found a way to harness them to create teleportation modules. These serve as an upgrade for the Seatruck, allowing the player to return to it from any point on the planet. So while moving around with the Seaglide and Snowfox is great and all, nothing beats the ability to instantly teleport back to the Seatruck.
